At MR, we stayed at the Surfpoint at Prevelly Backpackers. The accommodations in MR are really expensive, so we found this backpackers hostel which was about 15mins drive from the town. The hostel is quite new, and just near the beach. Costs $31 per night for a 4 bed dorm. They have BBQ, kitchen, and pool table.
The beautiful flowers in the hostel.
This beautiful morning, the first place we went to is Vasse Felix winery. Their restaurant and wine cellars are really class, from the outside. And beautiful garden too. But it opens only at 10am. Oopss. . .
So straight on to Margaret River Chocolate Company**** Tasty choc, all you can eat. . . samples! This shop opens at 9am. We think it’s the earliest shop that opens at MR, other wineries and shops opens at 10am. So this is the first stop to go for the ultimate eat, drink tour in MR!
A hot chocolate, with marshmallow to warm our stomachs in the morning~ Taste is just average. Instead of using chocolate powder for the hot choc, they melt choc tablets in hot milk.
Found our way to a small nougat tasting shop nearby the choc factory. The owner just settled in for the morning, wasn’t quite free to entertain us though. He offered us to sample Cranberry soft nougat. We still prefer the hard nougat.
Of the hundreds of winery in MR, we bumped into Hay Shed Hill Winery**** (which was among few recommended by the tourism office). We went to the right shop, cause we went out carrying four bottles of wine. Late Harvest White and Cabernet Sauvignon. All taste really good. And also free grapefruits!
Next on, the MR Dairy Company**** We get to taste all sort of cheese not found in Malaysia and also their specialty pot yogurt. Angie likes the peppercorn cheese and sweet chili cheese~ The night before we bought MR dairy company’s yogurt at Coles which was actually cheaper than buying at their shop itself! Hmm..
After all the eating and tasting, we went to the Lake Cave**** in Caves Road. There are three famous cave tour around MR, Jewel Cave, Lake Cave and Mammoth Cave. There is a special pass selling for $60 which include the entrance to those three caves and Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. It was quite a deal, but will need couple days in MR to explore all three caves then. So we chose Lake Cave, entrance and tour fee is $22 per person. The tour starts 9.30am to 3.30pm, on every hour.
There are 350 stairs to descend before getting to the opening of the cave. Going back up is exhausting, but the surroundings is really beautiful and looks like movie scenes. Heard some opinion from other travelers that Mammoth cave is superb, because it is a self guided tour, you can explore the cave yourself. Well, too many things to see, too little time!
The famous 'suspended table'
From the cave, we went to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse*****. On the way there, we passed by the beautiful Karri forest.
When we reach the lighthouse, we were just in time for the last tour up the lighthouse with little time to spare for photo snaps. Entrance fee to the lighthouse ground is $5. The tour fee is $17 per person, starts 9am, every 40mins. Closing time is 5pm. So by the time we finish the tour at 5pm, the workers won’t allow anyone to stay there anymore. Better get there early, and since it’s a whale season, you use the binoculars at the lighthouse ground to sight for whales! Not our lucky day either, no whales around.
View from the lighthouse.
A friendly tour guide tells interesting stories on the lighthouse functions and history. The sea is really beautiful up above the lighthouse, and extremely windy!
If you take a detail look into the picture, you can notice that actually there are two directions of wave and meet at somewhere in the middle. The left side is Southern Ocean and another side is Indian Ocean, this is awesome!!
The water wheels just nearby the lighthouse. This place is perfect spot for sunset pictures!
